What Will You Learn in 7 Months?
West Coast College’s MLA Diploma Program runs for 7 months, with two intakes per year (May and October). It’s 100% in-person, no hybrid or online format, because hands-on training is essential in this field.
The curriculum covers everything an entry-level MLA needs:
- Phlebotomy blood collection techniques and specimen preparation.
- Anatomy, Physiology, and Diagnostic Tests. Understanding body systems and what the tests measure.
- Hematology lab procedures for blood analysis and transfusion medicine.
- Clinical Chemistry specimen collection for routine chemical tests.
- Laboratory Microbiology processes specimens for infection identification.
- Cardiovascular System and ECG. How to perform and interpret cardiac monitoring.
- Laboratory Safety. Safe handling of biohazardous materials.
- Medical Terminology. The language of healthcare.
- Quality Assurance, maintaining accuracy and standards in a lab setting.
- Professional and career skills, including resume writing, interview prep, and workplace communication.
The final four weeks are a practicum of 150 hours of supervised clinical experience in a real hospital or private lab setting. Graduates have affiliations with all BC health authorities, including Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, and Provincial Health Services Authority, as well as private companies like LifeLabs.

Is This Program Legit?
West Coast College of Healthcare has been training MLAs since 1991. It was the first private college in BC to be given permission to deliver this program. It’s fully accredited with the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of BC, and the college has long-standing relationships with health authorities across the province.
